The Sanctuary of Madonna della Guardia in Varazze is on Mount Grosso, at approximately 400 metres above sea level, and less than two kilometres from the sea.
The Sanctuary dates back to the 1800’s. From the grassy area in front, enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire Ligurian coastline. On a clear day, one can see Genoa and the promontory of Portofino, as well as Corsica and the part of the coast leading up to Ventimiglia, not to mention - of course - all of Varazze.
On the walk up to the Sanctuary, visitors can explore the typical Mediterranean underbrush: broom, myrtles, sea pines, and aromatic herbs.
There are various access points to the Sanctuary, of varying levels of difficulty.

Duration: 3/4 hr
Difficulty: easy, suitable for everyone.
For the more athletic types, one can depart from Varazze and trace a circa 9 km (2.5 - 3 hrs) loop.
For those travelling with children, one can reach the summit by car, and then walk along a nearly entirely flat trail (20-30 minutes).
We recommend bringing a water bottle as there is no potable water along the trail.

Noli e Bergeggi

From 1192 to 1797, Borgo di Noli was the capital of the eponymous Marine Republic: albeit inexorably linked to the fate of the Republic of Genoa, it had its own significance and autonomy.
The quaint historic sailing village features narrow streets (caruggi), many of which are overhung by load-bearing arches and porticoes that date back to the early Medieval period.
The municipality is one of the few remaining coastal towns with a thriving fishing industry. Every night, the fishermen head out in their small motorboats, returning the morning after with the fruits of the gulf. The catch of the day is available for purchase by the public along the boardwalk.
TheIsle of Bergeggi, in the bay adjacent to Noli, is the heart of theMarine Preserve, which has been protected for over 25 years.
At approximately 300 metres from the Bergeggi beach, the island may only be reached by canoe. Guided excursions (about 2.5 hours long) are available, and suitable for children when accompanied by an adult. Two- and three-seat canoes are available. This is a beautiful day trip to enjoy with friends and family.

The Sistine Chapel is one of the most prestigious monuments of the city of Savona (as its name reflects), indicative of the patronage that links it to the eponymous - and much better known - Sistine Chapel of Rome. Both constructions, indeed, are attributable to the will of the same Pontiff, Sixtus IV (1471-1484), and both serve as testimony of the patronage of that Pope and his nephew, Cardinal Giliano Della Rovere, later elevated to pontiff with the name Julius II (1503-1513).

The Priamar Fortress: built during the first half of the 16th Century, it is a formidable military-style complex that dominates the city centre near the port.

The area around the tourist port includes the modern Costa cruise terminal, and the loading point for mini-cruises and recreational fishing. There are a number of restaurants, bars, and pubs in the area running between the dock and the historic centre. Be sure to see - and taste - the famous chick-pea cake and other Ligurian specialities like fried panissa and fish stew along the famous Via Pia. The pedestrian area and historic centre is concentrated in just a few kilometres between the sea and the shopping high streets. At the weekend, along the tourist port, enjoy a fish fry of the catch of the day, served in foil. Try out local brews along the many pubs along the dock.

Genoa: Art & Tradition

The Genoa historic centre is one of the most extensive in all of Europe a labyrinth of passalviaways (caruggi) that open up unexpectedly into little piazzas, once belonging to important aristocratic families.

The spirit of Genoa can be found in those little alleyways, long a melting pot of diverse flavours, languages, aromas, cultures, and languages. The historic centre, most than any other part of the city, has borne witness to that legacy.
In these spaces, bound by the hills and the sea, the pride of the wealthy merchants and Genoese nobility led to the building of sumptuous abodes (Palazzi dei Rolli, UNESCO World Heritage sites). For centuries, works of art were collected and kept here. The art can still be seen inside some of the palaces, which today are museums open to the public.

There are more than twenty museums and galleries open to the public in Genoa, of which the Palazzo Ducale and the Museums of Strada Nuova stand out: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Tursi, Palazzo Spinola, Palazzo del Principe, just to cite a few. Quite interesting are the full-day events organised by FAI, offering a rare peek inside these historic homes. A trove of art and architecture, dating back to the times of the Doges, is just waiting to be discovered - join the millions of visitors from all over the world who have been delighted by these treasures. Check out the Visit Genoa website to find detailed information on the city and its environs. The following is just a sampling of the area’s greatest hits that can be visited in half a day. Top off your visit with a sampling of local delicacies in the historic centre or at the Ancient Port.

Genoa Historic Shops

One delightful surprise in the historic centres is to come across a historic business open at least 70 years (in many cases, over 200 years). These shops and businesses are a treasure of which Genoa is particularly rich. Stumbling across one as you walk about the city is an authentic, one-of-a-kind experience.

These include elegant chocolatiers and candy shops, fabric, clothing, and sartorial shops able to create hand-made ties catering to connoisseurs including the royals of England, apothecary shops, fry shops and tripe shops, each with its characteristic aromas, workshops that keep alive traditional techniques for glass-blowing, or making seals or perhaps corks; workshops situated in ancient buildings, forming the very fabric of the ancient city centre, with period décor and instruments that carry on the expertise of long ago.

Thirty-nine shops have already been included in the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage, Municipality of Genoa, and Chamber of Commerce of Genoa's official register. There are a number of other businesses that are awaiting review to be included in the prestigious club featuring the best in Genoese shopping and commerce.
